The Shostakovich Chamber Symphony in C minor was originally his String Quartet No. 8, written in 1960 after a visit to still-devastated Dresden. It is one of the most agonized works in the entire Shostakovich catalog, and it is probably more popular in Rudolf Barshai's orchestration; even though the notes are the same, the string orchestra version brings a bit of distance to the hammer strokes of the fourth movement (sample track eight) and the brooding repetition of Shostakovich's musical initials.
