The Symphony for Strings Opus 118a is Barshai's transcription of Shostakovich's String Quartet Number 10 is less well known, but not for the fact that it is a lesser work: there is simply more emotion packed into the Chamber Symphony than the String Symphony. But Barshai draws splendid playing from his chamber ensemble here.
