New York bassist Drew Gress became increasingly visible in contemporary improvised music throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In the late ’80s, he co-founded the quartet Joint Venture, which released three albums on Enja spanning 1987-1994. Later, Gress led his own . based quartet, Jagged Sky, who released their debut, Heyday, in 1998 on Soul Note. The late ’90s also found Gress performing and recording in Paraphrase, an improvising trio with Tim Berne and Tom Rainey. Paraphrase released two CDs during the 1990s on Berne’s Screwgun label: Visitation Rites in 1997, and 1999’s Please Advise. Gress has performed across Europe; Asia; and North, Central, and South America. He has served as artist-in-residence at University of Colorado-Boulder and Russia’s St. Petersburg Conservatory, and has received grants from Meet the Composer and the NEA.

In bassist Drew Gress' music (all but Bartok's two "Mikrokosmos" on this program are his originals), expectations are constantly confounded. Sometimes the drums play the theme while the other instruments are accompanists; explosive beginnings occasionally are succeeded by wistful middle sections. The bass is a lead voice but never dominates; different combinations of instruments play unisons, and sound gives way to silence

The following year, he joined Gress' Jagged Sky ensemble for Heyday. In 2000, Monder issued Excavation, which again featured singer Bleckmann, drummer Black, and electric bassist Skuli Sverrisson. Another album with Bleckmann, Oceana, arrived in 2005, and also featured Sverrisson, bassist Kermit Driscoll, and drummer Ted Poor. The guitarist finished the album with keyboardist Andrew Cyrille and drummer Paul Rende. The following year, he paired with vocalist Sunny Kim for the atmospheric duo album The Dream of the Earth. He then joined pianist Randalu and Finnish drummer Markku Ounaskari on ECM for Absence. In 2019, Monder issued the trio album Day After Day, working with longtime associates bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Ted Poor.
