Glassworks is a chamber music work of six movements by Philip Glass. It is regarded as a characteristically Glass-like work. In fact, the cover of the cassette release stated that it was "specially mixed for your personal cassette player".

But Glassworks is the most pleasant craftwork ever from the great minimalist exploiter - six warm pieces that approach the spirit of minimalist pioneer Erik Satie. Only instead of Satie's lyrical-to-antic jumps, Glass creates the ble kind

Music by Philip Glass. CAST: 2 fl, 2 sop sax (1 clarinet, optional), 2 tenor sax (1 bass clar. NOTES: Music composed for the Glassworks recording. Each movement can be performed separately. Opening: piano (solo). Closing: 1 fl, 1 cl (can substitute sop), 1 bcl, 1 hn, va, vc, piano. Glassworks was my debut record on CBS. This music was written for the recording studio, though a number of the pieces soon found their way into the Ensemble repertory. A six- movement work, Glassworks was intended to introduce my music to a more general audience than had been familiar with it up to then. PUBLISHER: Dunvagen Music Publishers.

With Glassworks, Philip attempts to reach a broader spectrum of the population, Glass saying himself, "Glassworks was intended to introduce my music to a more general audience than had been familiar with it up to then. For the most part he succeeds, restraining his pieces to never go past ten minutes, and trades epic repetition for glorious crescendos and climaxes to create emotion and beauty. For all intents and purposes, Glassworks is a 5 movement suite of music that reflects Glass' stab at "pop". Opening" and "Closing" provide ethereal bookends to Glassworks, the latter being an electronic reprise of the gorgeous acoustic-piano former, with sleek hemiola work, triplets over duplets, immediately inviting the listener into the complexity of Glass' compositional stylings.
