William Lyall biography William "Billy" LYALL - Born 26 March 1953 (Edinburgh, Scotland) - 1 December 1989. UK composer and keyboardist will probably be best remembered for his band tenures. He started out as a member of Bay City Rollers, but when he decided that he should create a better future elsewhere he hooked up with fellow Scot and former Bay City Rollers member David Paton to form Pilot. To realize his ambitions Lyall decided to record a solo album. With a major cast of guest musicians the end result was released in 1976 as Solo Casting, a production described as a subtly more sophisticated version of Pilot's non-single material. This was to be Lyall's only solo production. One might suspect that the disco and punk waves about to hit the UK played a role, as the label attitudes to art rock soured due to that, but we'll probably never truly know.

The tension between David Paton's pop songcraft and Billy Lyall's art rock aspirations is one of the things that made the band Pilot so interesting. Lyall left Pilot because he felt that Paton's twee power pop ditties were overshadowing his arty songs, but the split was amicable enough that his former bandmates played on his lone solo album, Solo Casting. The result is not very different from what a Pilot album would sound like if Paton's potential hit singles were removed.

This is truly a unique disc. William Lyall, the sadly overlooked keyboardist for the sugary sweet, highly charged powerpop group Pilot, somehow managed to gather his musical cohorts to help produce this masterpiece collage of songs. Amazing that what you're hearing was done more than 30 years ago. The title cut is a classic that never was.

This album is a lost classic, The songs, arrangements and musicianship on this album are astounding.Musically there are nods to his previous band Pilot, art rock and hints of Kate Bush even (circa her first two albums) but what comes across generally is a very individual sound, Lyall's unusual layered voice and harmonies greatly contribute to this, I think a lot of comments I have read about this album are by people who have not actually listened to it, I discovered it a couple of years ago and it is has become one of my favorite albums, you just wonder what would have come next had it been successful, I recall a few TV promotional interviews at the time and the video being shown, but ultimately with the musical climate changing and what was about to explode in 1977 it was one of many really good albums that got overlooked.

To the surprise of the music album, which passed by the general public. I opened it myself when I turned 60, although it was recorded when I was in school
