Led Zeppelin had a fully formed, distinctive sound from the outset, as their eponymous debut illustrates. Taking the heavy, distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme, Zeppelin created a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms. As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start. Although the extended psychedelic blues of "Dazed and Confused," "You Shook Me," and "I Can't Quit You Baby" often gather the most attention, the remainder of the album is a better indication of what would come later. Although the album isn't as varied as some of their later efforts, it nevertheless marked a significant turning point in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal.

Led Zeppelin is the debut album by English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released on 12 January 1969 in the United States and on 31 March in the United Kingdom by Atlantic Records. The album was recorded in September and October 1968 at Olympic Studios, London, shortly after the band's formation. It contains a mix of original material worked out in the first rehearsals, and remakes and rearrangements of contemporary blues and folk songs
Technically, the fourth Led Zeppelin album is untitled as Jimmy Page got angry at the mixed response gathered by predecessor Led Zeppelin III. Still, many names over the years have accumulated, most commonly Led Zeppelin IV given the previous three albums were numbered. Another is ZoSo, after one of the four symbols representing the band members that show up. Led Zeppelin IV is also commonly called The Fourth Album, The Hermit, Runes, Untitled, and Four Symbols. In fact, the original cover had no words on the outside at all, and only had symbols on the inner sleeve and record label

The album opens with lots of guitarrhythm section exchanges (in the fashion of Beck’s Shapes of Things on Good Times Bad Times, which might have been ideal for a Yardbirds’ B-side. Here, as almost everywhere else on the album, it is Page’s guitar that provides most of the excitement. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You alternates between prissy Robert Plant’s howled vocals fronting an acoustic guitar and driving choruses of the band running down a four-chord progression while John Bonham smashes his cymbals on every beat. In their willingness to waste their considerable talent on unworthy material the Zeppelin has produced an album which is sadly reminiscent of Truth. Like the Beck group they are also perfectly willing to make themselves a two- (or, more accurately, one-a-half) man show.
