Music has always been central to us here at Paste. The music staff covers all they can when it comes to the popular music of the day, but personal preference is still inevitable. Indie rock in particular has always been embraced here, but for just a moment let me campaign for a much more traditional set of recordings. This live album captures a great set of pure, unadulterated roots music from early in their career, which nonetheless still features some of the band’s best songs. Even a simple tune such as Baker’s Waltz is among the prettiest fiddle waltzes I’ve ever heard. Mountain Shout is an album of the latter, featuring traditional songs such as Red Rocking Chair or the wonderful Child Ballad Edward. Both Premo and guitarist Michael Beauchamp have rustic voices that perfectly fit their chosen field-they seem to have been born to perform folk songs for small, intimate audiences.

Recorded in 1960, this collection of old-time French-Canadian, Irish, and Scottish fiddle tunes is a wonderful example of Jean Carignan’s skill on the instrument. Even with prolific Folkway’s artist Pete Seeger playing banjo on several of the tracks, Carignan, who began learning fiddle form his father at the age of four, is the uncontested star of this record.

Finding new popularity in the dance clubs of Germany, Rudiger Ladwig and his Roof Music released 16 versions of the Hebb composition on the Trocadero Records label in Europe. Beginning with a mono version of Bobby Hebb's original hit, the album proceeds with a one minute forty-six second version by Arthur Lyman Group licensed by Ryko Disc and copywritten in 1996, though it sounds older. Georgie Fame, according to the liner notes, hit number 13 in the . just two weeks after Hebb's original hit number 12. Cher also got into the race and her Spector-ish version hit number 32.
