Cousin Emmy with The New Lost City Ramblers. Cousin Emmy, born Cynthia May Carver (1903-1980) in Barren County, Kentucky, brought the old time banjo music of her roots to glitzier venues, where she donned sequined dresses to create a stage presence, all the while maintaining the integrity of her clear vocals and banjo frailing. It was at such a venue, at a Country & Western Night performance at the Disneyland Resort in 1961, that she happened to meet the New Lost City Ramblers, who accompany her on this album.

Cousin Emmy is a terrific banjo player, but so are all three of them. The decision for Seeger to play only mandolin, with Cohen on guitar and Schwarz and guest George Winston handling the bass duties, may have keep distractions to a minimum, but in the process removed one of the better features of the New Lost City Ramblers, the colorful textures of changing instruments. In terms of highlights, there is one hands-down masterpiece: "Graveyard" is simply one of the most beautiful Appalachian ballads ever recorded.

The New Lost City Ramblers, or NLCR, is a contemporary old-time string band that formed in New York City in 1958 during the Folk Revival. Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley were its founding members. Tracy Schwarz replaced Paley, who left the group in 1962. Seeger died of cancer in 2009, and Paley died in 2017. NLCR participated in the old-time music revival, and continued to directly influence many later musicians.

Notes

Cousin Emmy and the New Lost City Ramblers FW31015

Cousin Emmy, born Cynthia May Carver (1903-1980) in Barren County, Kentucky, brought the old time banjo music of her roots to glitzier venues, where she donned sequined dresses to create a stage presence, all the while maintaining the integrity of her clear vocals and banjo frailing. It was at such a venue, at a “Country & Western Night performance” at the Disneyland Resort in 1961, that she happened to meet the New Lost City Ramblers, who accompany her on this album.

The quintessential music of Cousin Emmy can be heard on this album in the classic bluegrass played in the style of mountainous regions, sometimes very popular in the mountains of eastern Kentucky but rarely recorded, and in Emmy’s reinterpretations that became standalone classics themselves, such as " Ruby are you mad at your man?"
