The Specials is the debut album by British ska revival band The Specials. Released on 19 October 1979 on Jerry Dammers' 2 Tone label, the album is seen by some as the defining moment in the UK ska scene. Produced by Elvis Costello, the album captures the disaffection and anger felt by the youth of the UK's "concrete jungle"-a phrase borrowed from Bob Marley's 1972 album Catch a Fire but equally apposite used here to describe the grim, violent inner cities of 1970s Britain.

A perfect moment in time captured on vinyl forever, such is the Specials' eponymous debut album; it arrived in shops in the middle of October 1979 and soared into the . It was an utter revelation - except for anyone who had seen the band on-stage, for the album was at its core a studio recording of their live set, and at times even masquerades as a gig. There were some notable omissions: "Gangsters," for one, but that had already spun on 45, as well as the quartet of covers that would appear on their live Too Much Too Young EP in the new year.

Brilliant new album out!! such good music and good vibes. They got ever better over time Specials !!! Enjoy yourself! IT's later than you think!!!

The Specials’ first album of new material in 37 years, Encore is their first ever UK Number 1 album, clocking up 89% physical sales and, coincidentally, it’s 39 years ago this week since their single Too Much Too Young topped the Official Singles Chart. Check out their full Official Charts history here. Receiving the award, The Specials told OfficialCharts. com, Recording the album has been one of the most amazing trips of our lives. Busted are runners-up with Half Way There, their third album to reach Number 2 – 2002’s self-titled debut and 2003’s A Present For Everyone also just missed the top spot on the Official Albums Chart. Another three brand new albums end their first week in the Top 10: Ripples by Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown (4), London rapper Fredo’s first full-length album Third Avenue (5), and Claire Richards’ debut solo project My Wildest Dreams (9). MORE: Every Official Albums Chart Number 1.

When the Specials’ Jerry Dammers’ launched the 2 Tone label in Britain in 1979, his group was more than just a ska revival band with good taste in covers - they were a multi-racial spearhead of a post-punk movement combatting skinhead racism (fueled by far-right groups like the National Front) and the craven business-first classism of the Thatcher government. Now, with racist nationalism on the rise amidst the Brexit debacle, the Special’s third album - 38 years since the last one, More Specials - is well timed. As frontman Terry Hall puts it, the band remain horribly relevant.

The Specials, one of the most electrifying, influential and important bands of all time, follow the announcement of Encore, their first new album in 37 years, with the release of their new single ‘Vote For Me’ via UMC /Island Records. The song has just debuted on BBC Radio 1 on Steve Lamacq’s programme and you can hear it below. 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of The Specials and the legendary Two-Tone label in Coventry in 1979, and also marks 10 years since the band reformed to play some of the most vital and joyous live shows in recent memory. The Specials will take to the road in the UK and abroad throughout 2019 in support of Encore, which is released on 1 February 2019.
