Greatest Hits (Crosby, Stills & Nash album). Greatest Hits is the fifteenth Crosby, Stills & Nash album, and their fifth compilation, released by Rhino Records in 2005. It peaked at on the Billboard 200, debuting at that position on April 2, 2005 with first week sales of 33,000 copies, and spending eight weeks on the chart. Its current sales sit at over 640,000. The album was dedicated to Cass Elliot with great thanks to Neil Young.
The Crosby, Stills & Nash triumvirate shot to immediate superstardom with the release of its self-titled debut LP, a sparkling set immortalizing the group's amazingly close, high harmonies. While elements of the record haven't dated well - Nash's Eastern-influenced musings on the hit "Marrakesh Express" now seem more than a little silly, while the antiwar sentiments of "Wooden Ships," though well-intentioned, are rather hokey - the harmonies are absolutely timeless, and the best material remains rock-solid
There's a reason why David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash didn't adopt a group name when they joined forces. From the start, they kept their identities distinct even when they blended their voices in lustrous harmony. Their 1969 debut album had the intimate, homemade feel of three friends making music together. Beneath the mellow surface, though, was a complex interweaving of folk, rock, blues, and Latin elements
About Crosby, Stills & Nash . Released by Atlantic Records in 1969, CS&N’s self-titled debut LP immortalized the triumvirate. With hit singles such as Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Marrakesh Express, the album simultaneously lifted the group to stardom and inspired a new aesthetic of songwriting that helped define a 70’s genre of songwriting void of subterfuge. In 2012, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album as the 262nd greatest of all-time. Nash, in his 2013 autobiography, Wild Tales, describes the creation of the album: There was no great preamble to making our first album
Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) was a vocal folk rock supergroup made up of American singer-songwriters David Crosby and Stephen Stills and English singer-songwriter Graham Nash. They were also known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, who was an occasional fourth member. They were noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on American music and culture.
Crosby, Stills & Nash were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Neil Young has also been inducted as a solo artist and as a member of Buffalo Springfield. Prior to the formation of CSN, each member of the band had belonged to another prominent group, due to internal friction, Crosby was dismissed from the Byrds in late 1967. Nash initially met both David Crosby and Stephen Stills in 1966 during a Hollies US tour, on a subsequent visit to the US in 1968, he was more formally introduced to Crosby by mutual friend Cass Elliott in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles. Nash left the Hollies to form a new group with Crosby, a trio at first, Crosby, Stills & Nash later became a quartet with Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Nash, nicknamed Willy by his mates, has been described as the glue that keeps their often fragile alliances together.
