Aja (/ˈeɪʒə/, pronounced Asia) is the sixth studio album by the jazz rock band Steely Dan. Originally released in 1977 on ABC Records, the album peaked at number three on the US charts and number five in the UK. It was the band's first platinum album and ultimately became their best-selling studio release, eventually selling over 5 million copies. It spawned a number of hit singles, including "Peg", "Deacon Blues", and "Josie"

A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. Instead, it's a measured and textured album, filled with subtle melodies and accomplished, jazzy solos that blend easily into the lush instrumental backdrops. But Aja isn't just about texture, since Becker and Fagen's songs are their most complex and musically rich set of songs - even the simplest song, the sunny pop of "Peg," has layers of jazzy vocal harmonies

Aja was the biggest selling album of Steely Dan's career. This is a portrait of the making of this 1977 jazz-rock album. It includes archival footage, newly recorded performances, and interviews with Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, producer Gary Katz, songwriter Ian Dury, Doobie Brothers member Michael McDonald, and the session musicians involved in the recording.

Jazzwax: What haven’t you ever told anyone before about the album Aja? Donald Fagen: Wow. Well, I know that halfway through we decided we wanted to go back to NY and do some tracks with some of the people we knew in the city. We felt that although there were great musicians in . we were missing a little bit of soul from the days we were doing New York sessions. Half the album was done in . and half was done in New York.
