Leon Russell is the debut solo album by the singer, songwriter and t Leon Russell. It followed his debut with the Midnight String Quartet and a production by Russell and Marc Benno billed as the Asylum Choir. A Song for You written and sung by Leon Russell for this his first solo album is a slow, pained plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover, the tune is one of Russell's best-known compositions.

Since Russell was primarily an album artist, this approach doesn't necessarily do him justice, but for listeners who only want the hits, this will do. However, the double-disc Gimme Shelter: The Best of Leon Russell is a better, more thorough overview and is the one serious fans should acquire.

The name alone says it all. Many people think that they don't really know this artist's music. Just that this 1997 release encompasses all that talent into one Retrospective album. Russell is first and foremost a piano player, and that is demonstrated on this album. While he's primarily a rock n' roller, you hear the country, gospel, blues and cajun influences that make up the total of this man's sound. Some of these songs are heavy on the production, featuring background singers, orchestration, and sound effects (Out in the Woods has some wonderful jungle sounds, and Back to the Island has sound effects that absolutely transport you)

This album has an average beat per minute of 115 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 76/188 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page. Tracklist Retrospective. BPM Profile Retrospective.
