13 is the 19th and final studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath. The album was released on 10 June 2013 in Europe and 11 June 2013 in North America, via Vertigo Records and Republic Records in the United States, and via Vertigo Records worldwide.
Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album. Additionally, the opening track of the album-Black Sabbath-is widely considered to be the first doom metal song.
Black Sabbath return with their own special brand of heavy doom metal that at once hearkens back to the old days while at the same time bringing something new into the hallowed archives of Black Sabbath. Overall conclusion is that the album kicks ass and proves that Black Sabbath still lives. Geezer owns the bass and, of course, Tony Iommi's titanic riffs give the biggest middle finger to lymphoma ever given in the metal scene. Oddly enough, Ozzy's melodies are actually singable and manageable in their live shows, though sometimes, due to this album being in e-flat, a la The Devil You Know, his vocals sound a bit like those from Down to Earth.
The current Black Sabbath reunion has been star-crossed almost from the start. Original members Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward staged a splashy press conference in November 2011 to announce a tour and a Rick Rubin-produced album, but the mood quickly soured . As sturdy as 13 's songs are, the album's signature feature might be its pervasive jamminess. Sabbath were never much for the drawn-out grandstanding of Zeppelin, but they did begin life as a blues band on the nightly grind.
It was formally announced on January 13, 2013 that the new album’s name was 13, and that Brad Wilk was the drummer. This news broke due to time zone issues on Sunday night the 12th in the US. It was Rick Rubin’s idea to get Brad Wilk, saying he sounds like an early Bill Ward, and that sound was needed for this material. During recordings, the band spent at most 5 hours a day in studio, they didn’t want to burn out on the process.
