For most of their history, Holy Fuck have operated as the augmented duo of Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh, surrounding themselves with a rotating cast of bass players and drummers (sometimes more than one at a time). Over the last few years, though, a consistent lineup has solidified, with bassist Matt McQuaid and drummer Matt Schulz holding down the rhythm section. And as one might expect, the consistency has affected the band's sound, making Latin, the band's third album, leaner and funkier than its predecessors.

Sort-of title-track Latin America follows in a similar fashion, the swinging drums and synths pumping. A simple, understated piano tamps out the chords, though, a move one wouldn’t expect in the midst of the bombast. It’s more like Cold War Kids in an instrumental electronica phase than like Daft Punk, an interesting new move for Holy Fuck. Stay Lit is whimsical, flowing, almost like a synth-pop soundtrack to a story about a prince fighting an army of villains. It’s triumphant, epic.

If opposites really do attract, it makes perfect sense that Holy Fuck would choose a barn in rural Ontario to record a series of dynamic electro-noise pop tracks that compose their latest full-length release, titled Latin. There is an added dimension of song craft on Latin, it brings noise and melody together with an uncanny sense of optimism - but at the same time Holy Fuck have not lost the chaotic and euphoric energy that they are known fo. t's no wonder Holy Fuck's Latin is one the most highly anticipated releases this Spring. This album is amazing. HF have created a musical, driving mix of drum and bass and electronic noise that doesn't sound boring or austere and pre-programmed.
