After a thoughtful mapping of the genre’s origins and solid coverage of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the set too deeply descends into the neon morass of hair-metal hell, lavishing excessive attention on Sunset Strip lesser lights at the expense of the genre’s undersung and less campy corners. Meanwhile, missing in action are any examples of grindcore (Napalm Death would’ve been nice), doom/stoner metal (. St. Vitus or Sleep) or any of the genre’s current standard-bearers (Mastodon, for starters).
Various artist hit compilations. This has been a very successful part of the album market since the early 1970s. Recent hit singles are gathered together in one place. In the 1970s, these were often single vinyl LPs with 10 to 12 tracks or more. In the 1980s, a double album with 6 or 8 tracks on each side became the norm. Elektra Records released the first sampler albums in the 1950s. Private label promotional compilations. Promotional compilation CDs can be private labeled for products, retail outlets, or commercial organizations or non-profit organizations. Many hip hop producers will release a compilation album which features various artists, but with each track composed by the same producer or it is under the same record label. For multi-artist compilations, royalties are usually pro-rated.
Heavy Metal-Latest, Various. The box also boasts essays from Ronnie James Dio and Lita Ford, plus and a detailed history of metal by Mick Wall. Surveying the last years covered by the box, Wall concludes, metal had come full circle to the point where it was simultaneously riven by so many new categories and subgenres that you needed an encyclopedia to make sense of it all and yet it was more universally popular than ever before. The same could be said today so fly your devil horn salutes and crank it to 11 for five hours of musical mayhem. This is the digipak version. I've been listening to this box set all week, and it is a pretty comprehensive collection of classic metal. The focus of the box set is really from the 70's & 80's, though there are some songs from the 60's and 90's tacked on as well.
