Recorded at two sessions in early 1967, Expression represents John Coltrane's final recording sessions just months before his death. This band, working hard during the time leading up to Coltrane's demise, was performing in the most spiritually reaching territory Coltrane would aspire to. This is evidenced by the burning tenor/drum duet section of "Offering," perhaps the highlight of these sessions.
Producer – Bob Thiele, John Coltrane. Reissue Producer – Michael Cuscuna. Reissue Producer – Joseph Doughney, Michael Landy.
Recorded on March 7, 1958, it was originally released on the New Jazz label as NJ 8276 in 1963, then reissued in 1967 on Prestige as PRLP 7532, with a different cover and retitled The Kenny Burrel. mage: Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane. Image: Burrell Quintet With John Coltrane. Tenor Conclave is an album by Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, John Coltrane and Zoot Sims . The Mastery of John Coltrane, Vol. III: Jupiter Variation is a compilation album by American saxophonist John Coltrane, which features pieces recorded in 1966 and 1967, but not released until 1978 on Impulse! Records as IA 9360. All tracks were previously unreleased, at the time of release.
Only 4 left in stock (more on the way). This is the final Coltrane-approved release - he also gave the album its title - with the tracks recorded in 1967 at Van Gelder Studio on February 15 (To Be, Offering) and March 7 (Ogunde, the bonus track Number One), with Expression from an undated session. The music features Coltrane (tenor sax, flute), Pharoah Sanders (flute, piccolo, tambourine), Alice Coltrane (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Rashied Ali (drums).
The title track was Coltrane's last studio recording; the rest of the album was recorded at about the same time as Interstellar Space. To Be" features Coltrane on flute, the only recording he made on the instrument for an entire track. Expression was the last studio album to be approved for release by Coltrane before his death in July 1967, and was released in September 1967. Pictures, videos, biodata, and files relating to Expression (album) are also acceptable encyclopedic sources.
