The recording of the second CSNY studio album with Neil Young took place over the course of those years, but the quartet opted not to tour to promote it. The album was not well received, and Stills viewed it as "contrived". In 1989, Stills and Young commenced tours with their own bands, while Crosby and Nash began work on what was to be a new Crosby & Nash record.

Released in June of 1990, CSN's "Live It Up" album usually takes a beating from big fans of the group, and it's understandable in a sense, but the criticism also seems unfair and excessive. Admittedly, based on this album, it seems CSN have almost completely forgotten how to rock out. Apart from the album-opening title track and "If Anybody Had A Heart"-the latter of which has a lame, overblown beamed-in bridge-not one track even remotely qualifies as a rocker.

In addition to solo careers and within the larger aggregate of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the musical team of David Crosby and Graham Nash have performed and recorded regularly as a duo, mostly during the 1970s and the 2000s. After the success of Déjà Vu and the subsequent break-up of the quartet in the summer of 1970, all four members of CSNY released solo albums
That's what is missing on their first full-fledged trio album since CSN in 1977. They sing earnestly and well, and they are augmented, as ever, by the small, efficient army of players, such as Craig Doerge and Joe Vitale, who have made a career supporting them, but they just don't come up with the big songs they've led listeners to expect. In fact, there are quite a few songs by others. As a result, this is the least-satisfying of CSN's studio albums. Not surprisingly, it flopped badly in record stores.
