GUNTER HAMPEL - Choices. Filed under Avant-Garde Jazz By GUNTER HAMPEL.
Gunter Hampel (born 31 August 1937) is a German jazz vibraphonist, clarinettist, saxophonist, flautist, pianist and composer born in Göttingen, Germany, perhaps best known for his album The 8th of July 1969 that included fellow musicians Anthony Braxton, Willem Breuker and Jeanne Lee. Jeanne, now deceased, was Gunter's wife.
While peers of Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, and Archie Shepp, German Gunter Hampel and Dutch native Willem Breuker were introduced to American audiences with this breakthrough recording, now on its second straight reissue for the ESP-Disk label. Hampel is clearly a devotee of Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, doubles on vibraphone, and handles the flute on occasion.
Gunter Hampel (vibraphone, bass clarinet and flute) grew up studying German folk and European classical music. When he was eight he heard Louis Armstrong and jazz for the first time. Though he did not understand a word of English, he felt Armstrong communicating with him. This had an indelible influence and Hampel went on to win several jazz competitions. Hampel became a professional jazz musician in 1958 when he was 21. His ideas moved in a different direction from Armstrong, blowing in the billows of free jazz across Europe.
Music from Europe by Gunter Hampel, released 21 December 1966 1. Dissociation 2. Consolation 3. Renunciation 4. Modul 5. Esotheric 6. Epiphany 7. Turbulence 8. nomystery 9. Make Love Not War to Everybody 10. Music From Europe Recorded in Baarn, Holland on December 21st, 1966, Music From Europe was a strong statement of European free jazz from one of its first and strongest leaders, Gunter Hampel. Over the beautifully structured compositional suites are strong blowing and improvising by both reedmen (Hampel, Breuker) and the elastic rhythm section (Veening, Courbois).
Hampel is one of jazz's most prolific and self-reliant musicians. In 1969, he formed Birth Records to release The 8th of July 1969, an album of his compositions performed by a group that included Anthony Braxton, Jeanne Lee, Steve McCall, Willem Breuker, and Arjen Gorter. Since then, Birth has released nearly 50 albums of Hampel's work in a variety of configurations; some of his performance and recording groups have been the Gunter Hampel Jazz Quintet, Heartplants Quintet, World Community Orchestra, Free Jazz Trio, and New York Orchestra. He grew up under the influence of European classical and folk music, as well as jazz. He formed his own jazz bands in his teens playing all styles of jazz, from early jazz to bebop.
