☆½ ~ I have some kind of ambivalence about the whole album concept and its sound. Or consider a donation? End of year lists.

Black Lights’ is a searing survey of human relationships. Just like the epic poetry from which the group drew lyrical inspiration for their last two albums, the stories on ‘Black Lights’ are at the same time unique and universal. Uncomfortable and familiar to anyone who has dealt with the realness of distance. Through that distance, Jófríður, Áslaug and Doddi managed a more subtle message: that even physical separation can’t break certain bonds. The album was written and recorded over the course of a year when all three were living in separate countries. A lot of talk about the album is what it is not. On the flipside, ‘Black Lights’ is a testament to the powerful connection that the group has. It is an evolution, a marked progression from their previous albums. It is a background album and a dance album, it is a heartbreak album and a hopeful album.

What has made Samaris unique so far?- The fragile voice of the lead singer- The reduced electronics- The spherical mix- The melancholic elegiac compositions- The Exquisite of the Icelandic Language- The acoustic part of the clarinet in the overall setting (connecting role between voice and electronics)The latter two elements are now missed on 'Black Lights'. Two steps closer to normality, to the commercial. Two steps away from uniqueness. Too bad.Still good, but not top anymore - now it's just Electro-Pop.

This was actually a quite pleasant surprise, I'm not usually drawn into IDM-like pop or sparse ambience but this was really awesome, definitely recommend it because it really catches you with the arrangements and very forward-thinking beats... Which are very warm and cold at the same time. They sound like Braids but with more emphasis on RnB and beats, and the vocals are very floaty and amazing as well, despite the iciness it conveys one can find so much in the metaphors, which are much like Björk's, very raw and abstract. It sounds like romance anno 2087 haha ;) Just kidding, listen and see for yourself!
