With the instruments stripped way back, Lights’ vocals are more emotion-packed and confidently honest than they’ve ever sounded. But what’s more important is that Midnight Machines gets you listening to the gorgeous songs she's penned, unbleached by production flash.

Midnight Machines is the fifth extended play recorded by Canadian electropop singer-songwriter Lights. It was released April 8, 2016 through Warner Bros. The collection serves as a companion to her 2014 album, Little Machines, featuring six acoustic versions of tracks from that album alongside two newly-recorded songs. Midnight Machines received praise from critics for its maturity and earned Lights her sixth top ten album in Canada.

Midnight Machines includes six new renditions of songs off of her 2014 LP, Little Machines, in addition to two brand new tracks. After each of her LPs so far, LIGHTS has released albums like this in which she re-records songs in an acoustic setting. In 2013, she recorded an acoustic version of Siberia and in 2010 she put out the Acoustic EP with songs from her major label debut, The Listening. The album finishes strong with the mystical slow-burner "Muscle Memory. Whether she has a keytar or guitar at hand, LIGHTS is able to create sonic masterpieces. Midnight Machines doesn't quite have the energy she was maybe going for, as the slow tempos are a bit sleepy, but this album further proves that she can make sensational music, electronic or acoustic.

Her third such album, 2016's Midnight Machines, follows up her Juno Award-winning 2014 effort, Little Machines. Featured on the album are six songs reworked from Little Machines, as well as two new recordings. During the recording process for Little Machines, Poxleitner was pregnant with her first child. Perhaps not surprisingly, that album contained a more mature, introspective tone with songs that spoke to Poxleitner's place in life: recently married to blessthefall lead singer Beau Bokan and on the verge of motherhood.

Midnight Machines will include acoustic reworks of six tracks from her 2014 album Little Machines and two brand new songs titled Follow You Down and Head Cold. She premiered the video for her acoustic rework of Meteorites this weekend. The video, filmed in Toronto, was shot in reverse. Lights had to sing all the lyrics backwards and at double speed to achieve the sombre, slowed down effect of the video.
