1975: Night of the Mark VII (Muse). 1975: On Stage Vol. 1 (SteepleChase). 2 (SteepleChase). Arranger, composer, saxophonist Clifford Jordan, a Chicagoan who now lives in Belgium with his wife, designer Shirley Jordan (a former owner of Clothing Manufacturing Corp. New York City), closed at the Chat Qui Peche here. He is a partner in a new record firm, Frontier Records, which records legendary musicians who have not had the proper exposure.

The late tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan always had a distinctive tone and a flexible, swinging style. He never became overly famous as a leader (he is best remembered for his association with Charles Mingus), but his own record dates were consistently rewarding, including Night of the Mark 7. Assisted and inspired by pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Billy Higgins, Jordan performs Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk," Jones' blues "One for Amos," Walton's appealing.

Night of the Mark VII. Clifford Laconia Jordan (September 2, 1931, Chicago - March 27, 1993, Manhattan) was a jazz saxophone player. Jordan had his own sound on tenor saxophone almost from the start. He gigged around Chicago with Max Roach, Sonny Stitt, and some R&B groups before moving to New York in 1957. Jordan immediately made a strong impression, leading three albums for Blue Note (including a meeting with fellow tenor John Gilmore) and touring with Horace Silver (1957-1958), . Johnson (1959-1960), Kenny Dorham (1961-1962), and Max Roach (1962-1964). Jordan also recorded with these musicians.

The late tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan always had an original sound even if his style was not innovative in itself. An expert improviser capable of playing both inside and outside, Jordan’s authoritative tone was able to hold its own next to Eric Dolphy in the fiery sextet that Charles Mingus had in 1964 - no easy feat. Live at Ethell’s is one of Clifford Jordan’s finest recordings. It is as harmonically rich, colorful, and honest sounding as you’d expect, with a natural view of the quartet: Kevin O’Connell’s piano stage front right, Vernel Fournier’s drum kit back stage left, Ed Howard’s bass right of stage center, and Jordan’s succulent tenor sax, surrounded by plenty of air center stage.
