The actual long and winding road itself, that Paul McCartney is referring to, is literally the B842, which runs from Kintyre, Scotland to Campbeltown, where McCartney had a farm and lived with his family. When Paul McCartney wrote the tune, he had Ray Charles in mind, to sing it. The song was offered to Tom Jones in 1968, though Tom turned it down, being involved in his own project at the time. The consecutive reworkings of "Busted," "Cryin' Time," and "I Can't Stop Loving You," three of his defining Top Ten hits of the early '60s, are given brassy, bluesy treatments here, and standards ranging from Oscar Hammerstein II's "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" to the Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road" are transformed in Charles' hands

Spector succeeded in overdubbing "The Long and Winding Road", using eight violins, four violas, four cellos, three trumpets, three trombones, two guitars, and a choir of 14 women13 The orchestra was scored and conducted by Richard Hewson, who would later work with McCartney on the album Thrillington12 This lush orchestral treatment was in direct contrast to the Beatles' stated intentions fo.
