MC Lyte – MC Lyte is an American rapper who first gained fame in the late 1980s, becoming the first solo female rapper to release a full album with 1988s critically acclaimed Lyte as a Rock. She has long considered one of hip-hops pioneer feminists. At age 14, she began recording her first track, although it took two years before it was able to be released, in 1987, when she was 17, Lyte began publicly outshining other MCs. She was also featured in the remix and music video of I Want Your by Irish singer Sinéad OConnor which debuted in May 1988 on MTV, in September 1988, she released her first album, Lyte as a Rock. Written over the course of years, the album was noted for such hits as Paper Thin, its title track, and the battle rap 10% Dis.

MC Lyte (born Lana Michele Moorer on October 11, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York) is a female rap artist. She was the first female rapper commonly acknowledged to be as hard as the men: she loves to curse, and she's got that fierce working-class Brooklyn voice and no-nonsense demeanor. But she's also written some of the most fearlessly honest and introspective lyrics in modern music.

The first solo rapper to release her own, full-length album, MC Lyte’s Lyte As A Rock dropped in 1988. Lyte’s flow, lyrical precision and refusal to self-censor gained her industry attention quickly. She has described the scene in its early days as competitive and skill-based, but not without a gender bias. There may have been times when promoters didn’t want to pay me what I deserved. In a line-up they didn’t want to put me where my songs warranted me going. But none of it affected me to a degree to where it mattered.

However, as MC Lyte’s career would attest, the microphone is an equal opportunity employer. One of the best female MCs to rock the mic, Lana Michelle Moorer was raised in Brooklyn and began rapping at the age of 12. When she was only 18, she released her classic album Lyte as a Rock. She held her own on each subsequent album, even becoming the the first solo female rapper to earn a Grammy Nomination with her song Ruffneck. As one of the most talented MCs during rap’s nascent years, MC Lyte’s longevity became evident over 3 decades in the music business.
