Crabby Appleton was an early-70s band who scored a top-40 hit with their first single, Go Back. Though nearly everybody in the group was from a LA-based band called Stonehenge, the group was re-vamped with the introduction of Michael Fennelly to the lineup. Though Fennelly was the final addition to the group, he was the group's leader, writing all of their material and being the sole guitarist and vocalist.

Go Back was the band’s first single, and the first song on their debut album as well. It crashed the USA Top 40, but the band never managed a follow-up hit, in spite of the fact that both of their albums are very solid. Even so, Go Back is pretty special–Fennelly’s lead guitar in particular has a nice, stinging tone that works well with his double-tracked vocals. This one got lost from classic rock playlists over the years, along with plenty of other worthy songs. The first time I heard was on a Sunday morning when I was in high school  . Crabby Appleton got their name from a cartoon–Appleton was the primary nemesis of Tom Terrific, whose Terrytoons shorts featured as part of the Captain Kangaroo television show in the late 50s.
