The Boeing 747 is an American wide-body commercial jet airliner and cargo aircraft. The first wide-body airplane produced, it was the first plane dubbed a "Jumbo Jet". Its distinctive hump upper deck along the forward part of the aircraft has made it one of the most recognizable aircraft. Manufactured by Boeing's Commercial Airplane unit in the United States, the 747 was originally planned to have 150 percent greater capacity than the Boeing 707, a common large commercial aircraft of the 1960s.

As of January 2017, a total of 61 Boeing 747 aircraft, or just under 4% of the total number of 747s built, first flown commercially in 1970, have been involved in accidents and incidents resulting in a hull loss, meaning that the aircraft has either been destroyed or has been damaged beyond economical repair. Of the 61 Boeing 747 aircraft losses, 32 resulted in no loss of life; in one, a hostage was murdered; and in one, a terrorist died.

The aircraft are based at Moscow Vnukovo airport, and seem to mainly be used on flights to holiday destinations (Bangkok, Phuket, Antalya, Punta Cana, Goa, et. and as substitute aircraft on a variety of routes when the capacity is needed. However, Rossiya also schedules the 747 on some of its trans-Siberian domestic flights including Moscow Vnukovo – Khabarovsk and Moscow Vnukovo – Vladivostok.

The first 747 prototype being rolled out of Boeing's factory in Everett, Washington, September 30, 1968. The purpose-built 747 factory remains the largest building ever constructed by volume. One of two 747s modified by NASA to serve as Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). The SCAs were primarily used to ferry the Space Shuttles from their landing sites back to Kennedy Space Center. Introduced in 1977 and retired in 2012, the first Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, SCA 905, was used to test the Space Shuttle Enterprise by releasing it mid-flight, allowing it to glide and land under its own control.
