While the quality in sound and packaging is again top shelf for Unsurpassed Maters, Vol. 9, the recorded contents of the four-disc box set are woefully incomplete. The reason there are no vocal sessions owes to the fact that they were recorded at Columbia Studios to accommodate Brian Wilson's desire to record the Beach Boys vocals using a state of the art eight-track tape machine. What is included on this volume is a majority of the instrumental tracking sessions for Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) and a few peripheral tracks recorded concurrently with the album. Among these stray songs is the single version of "Help Me Rhonda.
2009 – Beach Boys biographer Jon Stebbins was contacted by a man living in central California who possessed a box of multi-track tapes deriving from the Shut Down Volume 2 album that had been lost for decades. 2010s – A piano demo of "Surf's Up" was found hidden within a reel of the Wild Honey track &quo.
