Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab’s first album in a decade-and first in the wake of longtime vocalist Ndiouga Dieng’s death-continues to refine their hybrid West African and Cuban styles, a simmering, nocturnal sound at once effortless and totally in control. The biggest change here is the addition of the kora, a harp-like instrument that adds dreamy counterpoint to the band’s natural punch, texturing standouts like Fayinkounko and Natalia. Of special sweetness is the old standby Sey, featuring singer Thione Seck, who left the band in 1979. Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng Orchestra Baobab.

Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng. West Africa’s most iconic dance-band are back. Featuring the Single. Orchestra Baobab are back on tour this autumn, scroll up for tickets! Watch their performance of Papa Ndiaye at Jazz in Marciac from earlier this year here. NEW SINGLE! October 10, 2017. World Circuit are releasing a prime slice of old school Afro-Latin magic from Orchestra Baobab recorded in Dakar, Senegal in 2007. Originally an old Cuban son, Baobab’s version of Guajira Ven was inspired by a recording by Duo Los Ahijados’s, a band from Dominican Republic that featured the brothers Cuco and Martin Valoy.

Exclusively for Prime members. When Orchestra Baobab's album Specialist in All Styles had the double roll-out with World Circuit and Nonesuch in 2002, designed to promote their old archived albums, the band produced a dancing wave of Afro-Cuban son, rumba, and West African beats, with guest Ibrahim Ferrer, on American shores, and I was fortunate to see them during their West Coast tour the. following year. Ten years after the last recording, they have come together again in another, mainly Senegalese take of familiar Cuban and West African rhythms from Senegal to Guinea in a more varied album
