Turnstiles is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released on May 19, 1976. Joel recorded Turnstiles in part as a celebration of his return to his native New York City. Three of the album's tracks reference New York: "Summer, Highland Falls", "New York State of Mind" and "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)".

Turnstiles is Billy Joel’s fourth album, released in 1976. The album is Billy Joel’s third shortest behind Cold Spring Harbor and Glass Houses at only 36:22. This album contains only 8 songs, making it the length of a double EP, but was released as a full studio album. The album begins with Say Goodbye to Hollywood, a nice song, but nothing special

Another difference that likely plays into Turnstiles' superiority is that Joel himself was the producer for the album; rather than Michael Stewart on Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. As said, the music is still very much like its predecessors. However, the best of those works seem to have found their way together on Turnstiles; as noted above.

The site of the album cover photo location. Inside the uptown side of the The Astor Place subway station at Astor Place (8th Street and Fourth Avenue) New York. Here's a map of the location of the Astor Place subway station, which is on the Lexington Line train. It is located right between Greenwich Village and The East Village near the area around Washington Square Park and Bleecker street where Billy played in local clubs like the Bottom Line.

This is the album where Billy Joel came into his own as a mposer. Billy produced "Turnstiles" by himself, and the results were spectacular. Every song is memorable, catchy, profound, and simply amazing. I've Loved These Days" and "Summer, Highland Falls" are some of Billy's best ballads. Turnstiles' was a natural evolution of the Billy Joel persona. This is music that sounds as good in the studio as it would 'live' with only a piano. And because the music is so strong a quartet or even a small orchestra is just background mood. There are few artists who make sophisticated music sound so simple. The poetry flows from his singing voice like waterfalls and the piano blends harmonies that are bluesy, jazzy and rock 'n roll.
