The 1812 Overture includes digitally recorded cannons courtesy of the Fifth Virginia Regiment. Manufactured in Japan for US distribution.
The amount of good Tchaikovsky music on this album is rewarding. The addition of vocals to the 1812 overture is breath taking. The other versions I have sound funny to me, already). While some people have said that the cannon sound muffled and weak, I think they must be listening to the DTS/Stereo track instead of the DVD Audio track. Erich Kunzel and the Cinncinati Pops deliver a great Tchaikovsky concert. The new "1812" is the "choral" version and is very well done, but I think that the performances of the other works on the disc almost overshadow the "1812" I also have to wonder with a 61 mi. running what other Tchaikovsky work might have fit? I must say that this recording also has one of the best performances of the "Marche Slav" I have heard in a long time.
This rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture with the late Erich Kunzel conducting the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is on the TELARC label released in 1979. It must be the very first digital cd released, and I am unsure if it is completely "DDD" recording. I am under the belief that the compact disc music system was brought out in 1982. The couplings (Capriccio Italien, Cossack Dance) are pleasant but in reality are afterthoughts. This disc is all about the 1812, and it proves that the Telarc label is sorely missed in today's world of compressed MP3 sound.
Kunzel is sympathetic to the reality that such pieces are popular because they are meaningful to all kinds of listeners; these works are popular because they are loved, and you just don't go around trampling on things that people love, because it's like you're trampling on their hearts . The Capriccio Italien is a common disc mate for the "1812," but the "Cossack Dance" from Mazeppa is not. The two pieces are certainly a better choice than Beethoven's sprawling Wellington's Victory or some such, and these appetizers are played with a gusto equal to that of the main course.
Erich Kunzel & Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The 1812 Overture, Telarc’s all-time best-selling recording, is an audiophile’s dream. The superb playing of the Cincinnati Pops under the baton of Erich Kunzel combined with Telarc’s sound effects make this an unbeatable performance! The bells heard on this CD are those of the Emery Memorial Carillon, recreating the tumultuous clangor of church bells which Tchaikovsky envisioned.
