Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony used to make challenging recorded couplings. Think of their 2001 disc of Sibelius' Second with Tubin's Fifth, or their 2004 disc of Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps with Nielsen's Fifth, or their 2005 disc of Dvorák's Ninth with Martinu's Second. While the quality of their performances was variable - some were truly special, others simply workaday - the joining of two disparate but complementary works together always made for challenging listening.
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has built up a special relationship with the orchestral music of Tchaikovsky. Its 1941 recording of the Symphony No. 2 under Eugene Goossens was the first ever made of the "Little Russian. Those with an old-school regard as to the tempo in the Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy will feel like road kill in the wake of this harrowing interpretation; it literally flies by at warp speed, though through careful parsing of the slower sections the overall length of the performance is about average. It is certainly an exciting ride - breathtaking, even.

Accordingly the strings predominate in this performance, and the Cincinnati players make beautiful sounds, especially in the outer movements. Järvi treats the first movement’s big tune as a love song that grows more impassioned with each appearance. Отчёт EAC об извлечении, выполненном 27. сентября 2013, 4:15. Tchaikovsky: Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture. Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 74 'Pathétique'. The music on this recording is highly charged and very emotional, says Paavo Järvi. Listeners can hear this especially in his Sixth Symphony and his musical depiction of the timeless love story of Romeo and Juliet.
The Symphony No. 74, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer entitled the work "The Passionate Symphony", employing a Russian word, Патетическая (Pateticheskaya), meaning "passionate" or "emotional", that was then (mis-)translated into French as pathétique, meaning "solemn" or "emotive".
