Sebastião Rodrigues Maia (September 28, 1942 – March 15, 1998). Was a Brazilian musician known for his iconoclastic, ironic, outspoken, and polemical (but always humorous) musical style. He was also known for his habit of lightheartedly missing appointments and even important gigs. Maia performed in a variety of musical genres, ranging from happy and energetic dance music to sentimental songs such as his hit "Me Dê Motivo". He performed soul music, funk, bossa nova (in the 1990s), romantic songs, American pop, samba, baião, and Música Popular Brasileira.

By 1974 Maia had released four self-titled albums that included many of his classic tracks; Cristina, A Festa do Santo Reis, Idade and These Are The Songs, to name a few. His mix of American soul and funk with sprinkles of forró, samba and baião had been a big hit with Brazil’s youth. It contains all the teachings of a sect known as ‘Rational Culture’. The sect teaches that there are no miracles, everything is natural. It had entranced Maia so much that he had been to visit Coelho, as he mentioned in a 1991 interview with Playboy: When I arrived there I saw the business was umbanda, candomblé (both Afro-Brazilian religions), basic spiritualism.

This song is by Tim Maia and appears on the album Tim Maia Racional - Volume 1 (1975). Racional ‎(LP, Album, Unofficial).

Tim Maia lived a wild life. The late Brazilian singer/songwriter also created some fantastic music that married American R&B and Brazilian sounds in delightful ways. As a young man he spent some time in the United States before being deported on marijuana charges. Clavinet stabs mark the excellently arranged Bom Senso, and the album closes with the twelve-minute-long Rational Culture, where Maia proselytizes for the cult he belonged to at one point. Whether you’re a believer or not, there is no denying that this jam is super funky.
