Machinefabriek is the musical nom de plume of musician/sound artist and graphic designer Rutger Zuydervelt from the Netherlands. Rutger Zuydervelt was born on 28 July 1978 in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. He started working as Machinefabriek in 2004. Except for a few piano and guitar lessons when he was young, Zuydervelt didn’t study music. He graduated as a graphic designer. The sleeves of his releases are practically always designed by Zuydervelt himself, being a crucial part of the music.

And although they regularly work together in the quartet Piiptsjilling, their last effort as a duo stems from 2008, the album ‘Drawn’ (on Foxy Digitalis/Morc). But now ‘eau’ is here. eau’ (pronounced oh ) means ‘water’ in French, and that’s how it sounds; like gently rocking waves of sound, or like a babbling sonic stream of fractured audio debris. It also sounds a bit like the equivalent of sunlight dancing on the ripples of a lake’s surface. eau’ is not really a song, or a composition. The name (meaning ‘machine factory’) was on the façade of a building Rutger passed everytime he went shopping for groceries. Except for a few piano and guitar lessons when he was young, Rutger didn’t study music.

Genre: Musique concrète. With Voices is a collaborative work between 8 vocalists and Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt, under his Machinefabriek moniker. Each collaborator was asked to improvise over the same 35-minute soundscape. Those improvisations then acted as the initial seed that each song sprung from.
