Description

Опубликовано: 20 июл. 2009 г. Yefim Bronfman and Isaac Stern play Mozart's sonata for piano .

Brahms composed three sonatas for violin and piano, mostly during summers he spent with friends in the Austrian Alps. He reportedly composed some earlier ones that were destroyed. These sonatas are not as well known as Brahms's other chamber music, but they are every bit as beautifully crafted. Brahms was a pianist, so he enlisted the advice of violinists, notably his friend Joseph Joachim, in making the violin parts idiomatic. Stern and Bronfman take a serene approach to these Brahms sonatas. It is calm and even contemplative, as can be heard right from the outset, in the superbly-paced opening Vivace from the 1st sonata, Op. 78 (1879), where both musicians allow the music to breathe in a relaxed way. But the range of expression can move towards greater force, as one hears in the energetic coda to this Vivace.
