Hash-Bar Loops is the dub techno album I've been waiting for. The word "loops" in the title doesn't bode well, and I always thought DeepChord's much-sought-after material from a decade ago was more than a bit monotonous and overrated, so I didn't have high hopes for this release. But after the29nov's video for the atmospheric and catchy "Sofitel" piqued my interest, I gave the album a chance, and it did not disappoint. This is definately my Album of the year 2011. An evolution in Deep Techno which just began last year with Liumin. The new direction with the stronger beats and basslines mixed with outstanding field recordings from the big cities (Liumin Tokyo, Hash-Bar Loops Amsterdam) is a magical combination.

There are legion imitators, but few artists are capable of sculpting dub techno as sensuous, immersive and lastingly rewarding as that produced by Rod Modell. Historically the DeepChord man's finest work has arisen from his collaborations with Stephen Hitchell as Echospace, but here he flies solo and acquits himself beautifully, delivering twelve pensive studies in shimmering, kickdrum-powered aquatic ambience

DeepChord - Hash-Bar Loops Providing the most universally loved works in the post-Basic Channel phase of the genre, Rod Modell's a hard man to escape if you like dub techno. Like Deepchord presents Echospace's Liumin, Hash-Bar Loops-actually the first proper "solo" DeepChord disc not just made up of versions and variations-is a record based around a specific time and a place, this time inspired by Modell's stay in Amsterdam rather than the metropolitan sprawl of Tokyo. It sounds like it too: Loops is comparatively rustic and smokescreened, nailing the hazily laid-back. Modell chooses smaller-scale embellishments, like the illusory snares that gently bevel the kick on "Balm," but they often get lost in the album's overwhelming length and soupy soundscapes.

This album is bound to be one of the most fully realized listening experiences to grace your stereo this year, and is proof positive that DeepChord and Echospace are the rightful heirs to the dub techno legacy"). Rod also operated an audio-mastering facility in the Detroit area from 1995-2005, employing his services to many electronic record labels, including Richie Hawtin's M-NUS imprint. Rods idea of an album revolves around a concept that isnt always followed in modern day electronic long players. Buzzing in atmospheric warmth and layered with mesmerising rhythms, Hash-Bar Loops tells the tale of a hazy extended stay in Amsterdam, where the album was in the most part formed. Starting from deep and dreamy soundscapes the album warms from the outset with the opener, Spirits.
