In 1988 the album line-up of The Lodge performed a concert at the Bataclan in Paris minus Herman and Fier, with Gavin Harrison taking over on drums and Lyndon Connah (64 Spoons) as live keyboard player The Lodge disbanded. Following the European concerts, the band – always loosely connected - drifted apart

SMELL OF A FRIEND was recorded and released in 1988 and to no surprise came and went without hardly anyone noticing. While the subject matter and overall style is mined from the previous decade, the production and use of new wave type of guitar playing and electronic styles was clearly an attempt of being somewhat contemporary. While supposedly a successor to the well-received "Kew. Rhone" album of 1977, the album in reality feels nothing like that one as it is primarily driven by straight-forward rock guitar riffs or piano ballads. Unfortunately THE LODGE's one and only album doesn't really catch on fire like Bevgrad and Greaves earlier albums. There seems to be too much focus on trying to be contemporary and therefore the pop aspects overshadow the obvious attempts to create more subtly complex music.

The group’s only album - Smell of a Friend - was recorded in New York in 1988 (with overdubs added in Cambridge, UK). It was released by Island Records the same year. Kristoffer Blegvad handled most of the lead vocals, although those on the title track were split with Jakszyk. Elsewhere, Greaves recited the words on "Old Man’s Mood", and Lisa Herman briefly joined the ensemble to contribute lead vocals and piano to "Swelling Valley" as well as backing vocals elsewhere on the album. Influenced by the time of its recording (and perhaps by Jakszyk’s more direct approach as a performer), the music of The Lodge was much more compact and straightforward than that of Henry Cow or Kew. Rhone. with a stronger emphasis on rock guitar riffs. Some pieces, such as The Little Match Girl were effectively straight-ahead rock songs (albeit with typically Blegvad-ian lyrical twists and word-games).

Thanks to everyone who helped me during the process. sumbuk This is no longer a work in progress, according to what Camille wrote me May 22nd. It is a soundtrack of sorts, based on an old TV show, at least such is its genesis. I have been fortunate to be privy to 3 prior incarnations of this, each both better (IMO anyway) and a bit lengthier than the prior versions. This is very nicely done, and the June 1st release date is now firm. I understand a new Ghost Rhythms release is in the works.

A strange one - as most of Blegvad's - but this album shows a masterpiece, as least his germ, for the real achievement could be heard in John Greaves's "Songs", as sang by Robert Wyatt : "The Song" is a jewel ! "A recipe, a remedy, a cure"
