The Memphis Jug Band was an American musical group in the 1920s and 1930s. The band featured harmonicas, violins, mandolins, banjos, and guitars, backed by washboards, kazoo, and jugs blown to supply the bass; they played in a variety of musical styles. Between 1927 and 1934 various African-American musicians in the Memphis, Tenn. area grouped around singer, song writer, guitarist, and harmonica player Will Shade (also known as Son Brimmer). The personnel of this jug band varied from day to day, with Shade booking gigs and arranging recording sessions.

February 24, 1927 - February 13, 1928. All three of the Document CDs are fairly equal in quality, with the second volume getting a slight edge. Among the highlights of Vol. 1 are "Memphis Jug Blues," "I Packed My Suitcase, Started to the Train," "Kansas City Blues" (recorded just a few days after Jim Jackson's famous version), the heated "Beale Street Mess Around," and a previously unreleased "She Stays Out All Night Long. Fun music that still communicates to today's listeners.

Cannon was lucky to take advantage of the "Jug Band" craze that started in the 20s and was centered in Louisville, Memphis, and Nashville which allowed these recordings to be made. This music is significant given that generally commercial recording companies back in this time avoided Black banjo players who played the blues, even though the first Black male to cut a banjo record, Poppa Charlie Jackson, played banjo not guitar. Cannon was a multitalented banjo player with a unique finger style that is captured in these recordings.
