The Memphis Jug Band was an American musical group active from the mid-1920s to the late 1950s. The band featured harmonica, kazoo, fiddle and mandolin or banjolin, backed by guitar, piano, washboard, washtub bass and jug. They played slow blues, pop songs, humorous songs and upbeat dance numbers with jazz and string band flavors. The band made the first commercial recordings in Memphis, Tennessee, and recorded more sides than any other prewar jug band.

David Evans also recorded Hammie Nixon, the better-known elder member of the band, on his High Water Recording Company, supported by himself and other "junior" members of the Memphis Beale St. Jug Band.

Arguably Jug Band music is the first footings of rock ‘n’ roll – genuine ensemble playing that was made to dance to, listen to and generally inspire a good time feeling. The songs they sang were 35 years or more ahead of the sex and drugs revolution of the 60’s; lyrically they were far more outspoken in the 30’s. Paramount signed the Beale Street Sheiks, although not strictly a jug band. In the 1920’s a sheik was a cool guy, one to command respect. It had become popular from Rudolph Valentino’s film, ‘The Sheik’. Sheik was also a popular condom brand – both factors in the naming of this and other bands.

The prototype jug band, Will Shade's Memphis Jug Band mapped out a street-corner litany of blues, rags, and pop standards from the late 1920s through the mid-'30s, most of them for Victor Records. This fourth volume in David French's Frog Records' survey of the MJB's output collects sides they recorded for Vocalion and OKeh in 1934 as well as presenting alternate takes and test pressings done for Victor between 1927 and 1930.
