Nika Roza Danilova talks us through her new album, which you can listen to for free. Stridulum II by Zola Jesus was one of our favourite records of last year – a slice of cinematic, gothic-inspired pop with tunes as big as the arrangements. Nika Roza Danilova began her Zola Jesus project with a formidable arsenal already in place. The albums and EPs she issued over the last couple of years were startlingly realized for such a young artist, but Conatus, a big record that keeps turning dark and strident, makes them seem like warning shots. Most traces of obscuring murk have burned away, so that every pock and ridge in the rugged, elemental.
As on that album, the grime of her earlier work is gone, but where Stridulum reached out with somber reassurance, Conatus is internal, examining destruction, surrender, survival, and rebirth up close. Hikikomori takes its name from the Japanese term for people who withdraw from society, and revels in solitude even though its beat could set a dancefloor in motion.
Conatus is the third studio album by American recording artist Zola Jesus, released in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2011 and in the United States on October 4 by Sacred Bones Records Contents.
Zola Jesus' CD 'Conatus' does a superb job of applying deep percussion, and minor key melody to Nika Roza Danilova's deeply resonant voice. the ensuing musicality shines through like a burst of sun light through a stormy, darkly clouded sky at twilight. Certainly not a pop fresh recording, 'Conatus' is intended to be enjoyed by those drawn to contemplative music that incites the listeners darker, more cerebral.
