Mandoza (born 19 January 1978, Soweto, South Africa – died 18 September 2016, Soweto, South Africa) was the professional name of Mduduzi Tshabalala, a South African kwaito musician, born in the Zola South section of Soweto. He formed the band Chiskop together with three childhood friends, upon his release from Diepkloof Prison. He had been imprisoned at the age of 16 for car theft. His first solo effort, "9II5 Zola South", became 1999's top-seller, and he was nominated as "Best Newcomer" at the 2000 South African Music Awards (SAMA's)
He never knew his father, his mother claiming that he was murdered the same year Mandoza was born. When he was sixteen years old he was charged with stealing a car and received a one-and-a-half year sentence, which he served in Diepkloof prison. Mandoza strives to give an inspirational message to Kwaito. Mandoza uses his music as a way to encourage young South Africans to achieve their goals Musical career. The group signed its first record contract eight years after its formation and released their debut album, Akusheshi, later followed by Relax.
Mandoza released his debut album, 9-II-5 Zola South. It spawned the hit single Uzoyithola Kanjani, which featured General. When we made the song, we didn’t know how it would impact people, says General. The multi-South African Music Award-winning Nkalakatha album went on to sell in excess of 350 000 units, making Mandoza a platinum-selling artist. Mandoza released a good-selling album a year later. There was Godoba, then Tornado, then Sgelegeqe (the first single that wasn’t produced by Le Roux but by DJ Cleo), and then in 2004 Mandoza collaborated with pop crooner Danny K on an album called Same Difference. Although their respective record labels weren’t initially sold on the album, Danny K says: EMI and Gallo did a joint venture and the album went gold within a week.
