Album number seven, The Arts of Destruction, may be their most hyper-kinetic journey into looney tunes territory yet, and let me tell ya, it’s a whole lot of fucking fun to experience. That is, if you’re willing to leave your brain and prog appreciation at the door and wallow in the filth. I know I am! After an intro of swords clanging and battles raging, the title track rips out like Darkthrone‘s Transilvanian Hunger, with vocals that sound like one of the infected from the 28 Days films. In fact, one of the things that makes Desaster so enjoyable, is their committment to being so uniquely one-dimensional. These guys aren’t the most technical musicians out there, or the tightest, but man, this stuff is insanely amusing and as metal as Odin sponsoring a Manowar concert in Hell. Soupy, sloppy, overwrought, unintelligent black thrash.

Desaster’s history is going back to the year 1988 when two young Metal- possessed maniacs wanted to follow the path of bands like VENOM, HELLHAMMER or DESTRUCTION (whose song „Total Desaster gave the band its name) – to play some fucking Black Metal without compromises was their aim. After playing the still remembered first live gig in ’89 (which marked the official beginning of the band), DESASTER had to manage serious line- up problems in 1990 before Infernal, the only remaining member of the original line- up, found the right warriors to continue.

Aleksandr Yelesin It's Desaster so it fucking kills and has some of the best riffs around. They're over-the-top in a way that reminds you why you loved heavy metal in the first place.

The Arts of Destruction has a central sound to it, mainly taking a thrash approach and giving it undertones of melodic black metal, which Desaster does a fantastic job of manipulating when needed. For instance, tracks such as ‘Lacerate (The Rays of Doom),’ ‘The Splendor of the Idols,’ ‘Queens of Sodomy’ and ‘Troops of Heathens, Graves of Saints’ distinctly have a faster and more thrash-centric sound that is sometimes reminiscent of Show No Mercy by Slayer, particularly in the drumming and intricate cymbal work. The drums were miced up wonderfully, and I really enjoyed that aspect most of all through the album, and next to that would have to be the melodic riffs. Desaster have certainly proved to me why they are still around 24 years after the fact, because this band is more than capable of creating a visceral and memorable record in a melodic black/thrash mash-up.

Most likely "The Arts of Destruction. Desaster serves a bestial, scathing plate of black/thrash metal flying under the usual curses of this German band, not really showing any progression from their "Satan's Soldiers Syndicate" effort, but I don't give a damn. The band's seventh album is predictably diabolical and venomous, striking like the poisoned claws of a gorgon from Hell. Given that Desaster left the point of salvation decades ago, it only makes sense that they continue this burning feat after five years between releases
