The original pressing reached No. 48 in the UK Albums Chart in October 1970.
Mad Shadows noteworthy . This second album has some strong moments, and unlike their other long players, focuses completely on original material (although bit of the Stones and the Beatles show up), but along with a murky mix, this suffers from what plagued several of their albums, the inability to maintain the quality through both sides. It is often referred to as their darkest record, and after listening to Ian Hunter's haunting "When My Mind's Gone," you will understand why. The album is bookended by heavy rockers "Thunderbuck Ram" and the bonus track "How Long?" Psychedelic jams ("Threads of Iron") and country rock (the Mick Ralphs-penned and sung "It Would Be A Pleasure"), plus more hard rock ("Walking With a Mountain") await the listener between those two tracks. Mott the Hoople was one of the best in an era full of greats, (1969-1974) and this little CD called "Mad Shadows" is evidence of that in spades.
