All the Young Dudes is the fifth studio album by Mott the Hoople, released in 1972. It was their initial album for the CBS Records label (Columbia Records in North America), after three years with Island Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in North America. All the Young Dudes was a turning point for the then-struggling British band. Mott the Hoople were about to break up when David Bowie stepped in and gave them the song "All the Young Dudes".

Lo and behold, it did, which is as much a testament to Bowie's popularity as it is to his studio skill

All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople cover). Brit Pop. All the Young Dudes (Mott the Hoople Spite Tribute Mix). Red Hot Chili Peppers. All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople cover - John solo). One Of The Boys (Album Version). All The Young Dudes 78. 3:58.

Mott The Hoople released four albums before All The Young Dudes and their near demise. When this song was released, they quickly found a following in the UK and scored five more Top 40 hits before breaking up in 1974, with guitarist Mick Ralphs moving on to form Bad Company. This was Mott The Hoople's only US Top 40 hit and their biggest hit in England. It is the only Mott The Hoople song many people have heard, but the band has a large following of fans who think they have a number of great songs, but were never appreciated.

Mott the Hoople's single was released in July 1972 and made No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart, No. 37 in the US (in November) and No. 31 in Canada, and appeared on their album of the same name in September of that year. In November 1972, Bowie introduced the band on stage at the Tower near Philadelphia and performed the song with Hunter (released on All the Way from Stockholm to Philadelphia in 1998 and the expanded version of All The Young Dudes in 2006)

Info from excellent JustaBuzz:It's a well known story ... Mott The Hoople broke up in early 1972, and Overend Watts approached David Bowie looking for a job. Bowie turned out to be a fan, and convinced the band to stay together. He gave them 'All The Young Dudes', which in turn gave the band a chart hit and a future. The single was recorded at Olympic Studios on 14 May 1972, and was done in secret while MainMan negotiated the band's release from Island Records. The original recording included the phrase 'Marks and Sparks', a reference to department store chain Marks and Spencer. Concerned that this might be considered advertising and prevent the song from appearing on radio, Ian re-recorded the line as 'unlocked cars' for use on radio. Richard Weaver created a promotional film for the song, which included performance footage from teh Top Rank in Bristol. The single reached #3 in the UK and #37 in the USA.
