From DJ Shadow himself "Most of you are aware that both mix CD's I did with Cut Chemist, Brainfreeze and Product Placement, were bootlegged (counterfeited) en masse. When I say 'bootleg,' I'm not referring to the phenomenon in Europe where people take vocals of one song and put them on the music of another song.

Product Placement is an album by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist. It was released in 2001 on One29 Records. The CD was on sale only at gig venues on DJ Shadows tours between about 2001–2003 and was made on an extremely limited run (6000 apparently). The cover has a picture of Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow. Cut Chemist is dressed as a chef, DJ Shadow a moto-cross rider and drinking milk served to him by Cut Chemist. A sticker on the case reads "Now fortified with exclusive "Accu-Blend" technology".

It's just not as interesting as Brainfreeze, and the Rappin' With Gas segment wears thin upon further listens (unlike Thunderkick, which never gets old) ) is extremely well done.

Product Placement, the duo's latest collaboration, is being hyped as the sequel to Brainfreeze, with a similar mission (all rare 45s), format (two tracks, one hour) and release (extremely limited). Unfortunately, this sequel status will invariably lead to lazy critics comparing the new release to its cult classic predecessor.

This is one of the dopest and most original mixes I have ever heard. These guys rock. They have such a vast knowledge and repertoire of records, and still keep it real and keep it funky. The segment when they breeze through those killer old school Hip Hop instrumentals ("Get Tough," "Step Off," "One for the Treble," "Action," "Jam on Revenge," etc.) is impressive. Any true Hip Hop fan knows that that is some ill shit that they pulled off there. The rest of the mix, like the Brainfreeze CD/DVD, is an educational tour of old soul, funk, and rock tunes/breaks. And to top it off all of these records are 7" 45's!!! God I would love to see Shadow's collection.

Anyone who's heard "Brainfreeze" understands that trying to create an equally successful follow-up would be no easy task. "Product Placement" is very good, but falls just a few steps short of great. It's just not as interesting as Brainfreeze, and the Rappin' With Gas segment wears thin upon further listens (unlike Thunderkick, which never gets old). I will say that the jingles section (Coke, Strike Cola, Milk, etc...) is extremely well done. So yeah, this isn't quite the same caliber as Brainfreeze, but it's still better than most mixes you're likely to hear from any other DJ(s).
