I really like the mix on this album. Earthless has one of the strongest rhythm sections of any band I've seen live. Towards the end of "Electric Flame" (around 6:30) there's a wonderful part where Isaiah sets off to do his thing, and the bass/drums set a groove that really gets your foot tapping. You can hear Mike's basslines thundering along clearly. If Live at Roadburn is Thanksgiving dinner, then Black Heaven is the homemade blueberry pie with ice cream for desert. Black Heaven will most likely go down as one of my top releases for 2018.

Black Heaven’ is a pretty obvious evolution of Earthless’ core sound, presenting us not with their trademark psychedelic epics, but instead with six well-written and surprisingly catchy songs, all under 10 minutes and complete with vocals – courtesy of guitarist Isaiah Mitchell – on more than half the tracks. Much as I love the sprawling, long-winded space jams that make up most of their output, there’s a limit to how much you can take at any one time, and with 3+ albums of more-or-less the same, it’s refreshing to hear what Earthless can do once they’ve reigned it in a little
