Текст песни: In the heat of the summer When the pavements were burning The soul of a city was ravaged in the night After the city sun was sinkin'.
Following the subtly modern bent of much of The Cape Verdean Blues, Horace Silver recommitted himself to his trademark "funky jazz" sound on The Jody Grind. Yet he also consciously chose to keep a superbly advanced front line, with players like trumpeter Woody Shaw (retained from the Cape Verdean session), altoist/flutist James Spaulding, and tenor saxophonist Tyrone Washington. Thus, of all Silver's groove-centered records, The Jody Grind winds up as possibly the most challenging

Overlooked and underappreciated, The Jody Grind is easily one of Horace Silver's most complete efforts. There isn't one song that outshines "Song for my Father," but, solo for solo, song by song, A to B side, each selection builds upon the last creating a most satisfying listen. And, at 40 minutes long, it is never too cumbersome or underwhelming. Always a refreshingly funky expression of hard bop when nothing else will suffice.

HORACE SILVER RETROSPECTIVE No 9: The Jody Grind Selection: Blue Silver Artists Woody Shaw (trumpet) Tyrone Washington (tenor saxophone) Horace Silver (piano) Larry Ridley (bass) Roger Humphries (drums) James Spaulding (alto & flute), recorded Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, November 2 and 23, 1966. Of all Silver’s groove-centered records, The Jody Grind winds up as possibly the most challenging. It’s also one of the most underappreciated; Silver’s piano playing is at its rhythmic, funky best throughout, brimming over with confidence and good cheer, and evoking memories of the classic feel of his early-’60s quintet. It’s an interesting record which peaked at No. 8 in the Billboard jazz album charts, and is not what you might expect from the cover, though that probably didn’t harm sales.
