The Lefty's Deceiver is an artificial fly streamer pattern used in fly fishing for freshwater and saltwater species. The fly was originated by fly angler and author Lefty Kreh in the Chesapeake Bay for striped bass. The original fly was tied to resemble smelt, a common striped bass forage. When The Jody Grind released their second album, Lefty's Deceiver, they seemed destined for greater things. No other band in the country had a sound like theirs, at once light yet substantial, and drawing on several different rootsy genres without coming off as dour traditionalism. They had a crowd-pleasing live show and an expanding musical vocabulary. I'd go so far as to argue that if The Jody Grind had been the standard-bearer for the budding alt-country movement instead of Uncle Tupelo, the genre might've become more varied and more popular

Followed by the more experimental Lefty’s Deceiver, the band’s career was cut short following a car accident which killed two members. Hogan continues to perform as a solo act in Atlanta and has released one record. Shortly after the 1992 release of their second album, Lefty’s Deceiver, Hayes and new drummer Rob Clayton, along with Atlanta performance artist and poet Deacon Lunchbox, were killed in a car accident. The three were riding in a rented cargo van in Montgomery, Alabama, at the time of the accident, when a drunk driver crossed the I-65 median and struck them head-on.
