The Blues and the Abstract Truth is an album by American composer and jazz saxophonist Oliver Nelson recorded in February 1961. It remains Nelson's most acclaimed album and features a lineup of notable musicians: Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy (his second-to-last appearance on a Nelson album following a series of collaborations recorded for Prestige), Bill Evans (his only appearance with Nelson), Paul Chambers and Roy Haynes
As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues and the Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic "Stolen Moments," but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection
x player Oliver Nelson’s The Blues and the Abstract Truth is one of the gems of the mid-60s. It’s not a great classic, though it comes close to it, but it’s one of those albums that is so well conceived and executed -the arrangements and the playing-that you keep coming back to it to listen. It’s fifty-four years now since the album was recorded. The only player still alive from it is drummer Roy Haynes, who still plays as hard and well at age 90 as at 20 or 30 or 4. .His solo work on this album is on a par with his work on other albums of the day: driving and fluid but no longer quite as new as it seemed back then. The weakest of the three horns is Nelson. It’s common to say that Nelson played arranger’s horn, and it’s true.
More Blues and the Abstract Truth. More Blues and the Abstract Truth is an album by American jazz composer, conductor and arranger Oliver Nelson featuring performances recorded in 1964 for the Impulse! label.
The album is an exploration of the mood and structure of the blues, though only some of the tracks are in conventional 12-bar blues form. In this regard, though it is not modal jazz, it may be seen as a continuation of the trend towards greater harmonic simplicity and subtlety via reimagined versions of the blues that was instigated by Miles Davis's Kind of Blue in 1959 (Evans and Chambers played on both albums). Nelson's later album, More Blues and the Abstract Truth, features an entirely different band and bears little resemblance to this record. In 2008, pianist Bill Cunliffe released "The Blues and The Abstract Truth, Take 2", a tribute to the original album featuring new arrangements. Last Updated (Sunday, 01 March 2015 17:49).

The album is The Blues And The Abstract Truth, by Oliver Nelson. SPELLMAN, National Endowment for the Arts: Why? Because the album has great writing, great playing, and a real capture of the music of 1961, which was very much a live period in jazz. HORWITZ: It was. We don't think of the 1960s as one of the great golden ages of jazz. But certainly in composition, and in the virtuosity of the playing, this record is as good as anything in jazz music, I think. SPELLMAN: Yes, indeed . HORWITZ: It would be criminal not to mention the rhythm section of this album. These are three of the greatest players ever assembled for any session, I think. SPELLMAN: And, they're full collaborators in the music.
