On August 24th, Magic Kids celebrated the release of their debut album at Memphis' historic Levitt Shell, accompanied by the Memphis Youth Symphony.

When the Magic Kids appeared seemingly out of nowhere in late 2009 with their single Hey Boy, they were out of step with the big trends sweeping through indie pop. The innocent jangle and child-like glee found in the grooves had nothing to do with chillwave, lo-fi, beach pop or C86 revival. Luckily, Memphis comes through like a dream. It includes both "Hey Boy" and "Superball" and as a testament to how good the album is, they fit into the overall picture instead of being highlights. All eleven songs are tiny symphonies of sweetly sung, perfectly arranged pop that fit together like puzzle pieces and result in a completely satisfying listening experience.

The band, born out of Bennett Foster's vocals and Will McElroy's keys as well as various stand in performances by the other "Kids" in their previous group Barbaras, have spun into their own identity since they gained popularity in the Memphis music scene. Magic Kids have obviously been influenced by the Memphis music scene, and continuously drag their retro songs back to the present with a snake of synth that slides under most of their horn heavy melodies. Hey Boy" is the band's masterpiece, a grand pop spectacle that is a product of seven months of basement recording.
