Maiden Voyage is the fifth album led by jazz musician Herbie Hancock, and was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder on March 17, 1965 for Blue Note Records. It was issued as BLP 4195 and BST 84195. It is a concept album aimed at creating an oceanic atmosphere. Many of the track titles refer to marine biology or the sea, and the musicians develop the concept through their use of space. The album was presented with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.

These album titles include: Voyager. Jammin'(with Herbie). Hancock! And. ROCK YOUR SOUL, which is technically a 2007 compilation of versions of these tracks. It is interesting to hear the very first recording from HERBIE HANCOCK where he simply accompanies the band and even though you can hear a trace of his jazz funk sound that would evolve into more interesting creations, I don't think this is an essential recording by any means. His piano playing pretty much continues on his very first album "Takin' Off" where it has improved.

Line-up includes Donald Byrd (his playing on this session is especially good), Pepper Adams, Layson Jackson and Jimmy Cobb.

But her clipping of her lines at the end, making them so clean - especially in the way they interact with Shorter’s soprano - is rather stunning. The hinge of the set is Mitchell’s performance of a song she wrote with Larry Klein (who co-produced the album with Hancock and has been Mitchell’s producer for ages). Her voice has lowered a bit after a lifetime of cigarette smoking and age, but she’s lost none of her power. Her unique phrasing and ever-shifting rhythmic invention brings the listener back to why exactly this recording makes so much sense!
