Forever Breathes the Lonely Word is the sixth album by English alternative rock band Felt, released in 1986. This is the first Felt album with no instrumental tracks. The cover photo subject is keyboardist Martin Duffy.
Forever Breathes the Lonely Word is the sixth album by English alternative rock band Felt, released in September 1986. The record features Duffy's organ alongside two guitars, one sometimes played by Lawrence. The organ is foregrounded in the mix and creates a vastly new sound for the band.
With no instrumentals taking up space, Forever Breathes the Lonely Word showcases Lawrence’s best lyricism. He spins tales of weary hearts and wistful longing, of a world that offers little hope, and expresses doubt in religion, celebrity, and faith of all sorts. He imbues these narratives with a familiar intimacy; I like lost people, because I suppose I’m one, he once remarked. Though it can feel like a cosmic slight that Forever Breathes the Lonely Word was not recognized as a masterpiece in 1986, this twist of fate feels harmonious with the ideas that Lawrence laid out in Felt songs. I’d like to be remembered as someone who never lost touch with what he set out to do, Lawrence told Melody Maker in 1989, after the band’s final record.

Deebank left after the first album, but returned in time for Felt’s second, a largely instrumental album. The record is also six tracks and 31 minutes long, such was Lawrence’s eye for detail. 1984 was a busy year for Felt. Deebank released the instrumental album Inner Thought Zone (six songs, 30 minutes: Felt must have been like belonging to a cult), as Felt’s second album of the year mirrored the poppier complexion of their intervening singles. Here, it is ten songs over 30 minutes.
Their next album, Forever Breathes the Lonely Word, was a conventional collection of songs that gained the band praise and would become regarded by many as their best. In 1989, Lawrence declared it had been his intention all along to release ten singles and ten albums in ten years and, having done so, announced the end of Felt. After releasing their last album, Me and a Monkey on the Moon, and undertaking a short tour, the band split up. Lawrence went on to form Denim and later, Go Kart Mozart. "My Face Is on Fire" (September 1982), Cherry Red.
